KING NARESUAN,SYMBOL OF STRENGTH.
Part 1
A military genius and brave fighter,King Naresuan liberated Siam from the
Burmese.
A monument is built to this man who continues to be one of Thailand's
national heroes.
For Thais, King Naresuan the Great is a symbol of bravery and heroism.
He is considered a splendid commander, a man who ushered the country from
defeat to resounding victory. And yet although this is the image, many people
are quite lost when it comes to actual historical details of what happened.
In 1571, when King Naresuan the Great was eight years old ,he was taken
hostage by Burmese invaders. It was the custom of the time for the victorious
nation in a battle to take a royal child of the defeated monarch home as
insurance against further aggression..
Imagine the pressure the boy felt as a prisoner of war, far from home and
separated from his family, many of whom were killed by the Burmese.
He must have realized the only way to win his freedom was in battle and
that perhaps was the motivation for his amassing extensive knowledge of the
strategies of war and perfecting the use of weapons.
Later as a young man, the Burmese allowed him to go to Siam to visit his
father, but the young prince never returned to Burma. Instead he announced
Thailand would be free and no longer a colony of Burma.
Thus he waged a constant war and one using "new" methods. He waged guerrilla
warfare, using small forces to weaken the enemy through persistent, unexpected
attacks, Throughout his life, he never knew the luxury of resting comfortably
on a throne. He was constantly at risk of dying from disease under the harsh
circumstances he lived in while preparing attack after attack against the
enemy.
King Naresuan the Great is celebrated in many works of literature like
"Lilit taleang phai" by His Holiness Krom Phra Paramanuchitchinoros and
Prince Damrongrachanupphap's History of Thailand's Wars with Burma.
Even today a military camp in Phitsanulok and a police camp at Hua Hin are
named after King Naresuan and the are many monuments to him around the
country; The largest one of all is currently under construction at Lumphlee
in Ayutthaya.
The monument at Thung Lumphlee is a project conceived by Her Majesty the
Queen, with the Ministry of the Interior taking responsibility for realising
it and the Supreme Command Headquarters of the Ministry of Defense overseeing
devlopment and construction. Work on the structure began in 1995 and the work was
completed in the same year.
