KING NARESUAN,SYMBOL OF STRENGTH.
Part 3
The aim of the monument is not only to remind people of King Naresuan,it
will also help keep the historic significance of the area in
perspective. Right now, with Ayutthaya city expanding so rapidly construction
is taking place around the sites of these historic events.
The future preservation of these historically valuable areas are all sure to
be ruined. Some 20 years ago these fields were wide and clear and
unspoiled. There was the white Phu Khao Thong Chedi standing in the middle of
the field - it was one of the 11 holiest structures in the province.
"We would like to keep this field as it was. Most of it belongs to the
government. We bought part of it from villagers.Of the 646 rai they own, 260
rai will be used for a reservoir to dam flood water from Chao Phraya river
in the rainy season. This will help prevent flooding to the south and even in
Bangkok.Another 182 rai will be used for activities associated with the
Naresuan monument.
The area where the monument stand will be landscaped with grass and
threes. Then 22 rai will be developed to expand the cannal system and set up
a demonstration plot to show new agricultural methods to local farmers.
The King spent all his mental and physical strength on liberating Siam. He
subsequently ruled the kingdom for two decades before his death, due to
illness, when he was just 49 years old.His name however was to be remembered
for many centuries. Of course we don't know exactly what the King looked
like as no contemporary portraits of him survive; But the monument is not
intended as a likeness of his face, it is a symbolic representation of a
courageous warrior and one of the greatest national heroes of Thailand.
