The Ultimate Thai Boxing Training Tape 2000. Sandy Holt.

Tape review by SDJ

Here it is at last, I have seen adverts for this training tape absolutely everywhere and at last I get the chance to review it (thanks to Sandy for sending it to Dan). This video is set in the Bolton Thai Boxing Training H.Q. and stars one of the most well known figures in British Muay Thai, Sandy Holt. Sandy Holt was trained and graded by Master Sken and was Double British and European Lightweight Thai Boxing Champion. Anybody who is a regular at tournaments or is involved in Muay Thai would have seen or heard of Sandy Holt. He is one of the most outgoing, lively people involved in Muay Thai. With this in mind I expected the same bright and colourful approach in his video and was not disappointed!

The tape is meant to provide an instructional outlet for anybody, novice through to experienced, by which they can further their Thai Boxing skills and it does just that. It starts of with a very short warm up section, as Sandy points out you should all know how to warm up well so there is no point in showing it here. One criticism I might make, is that a lot of people do not know how to warm up properly, or if they do, it is nowhere near as tough or gruelling as a Thai Boxing warm up. It might have been a worthy addition, to the tape, to show people from other arts just what is involved in a full Muay Thai warm up! Following this we are shown the principles of boxing and elbow strikes in Muay Thai on the appropriate pads with Sandy and his assistant Instructors. Throughout his demonstrating he clearly explains what he is doing and what the student should be doing in order to carry out each technique correctly. Following on from this we are shown knee strikes and kicks, again on the appropriate pads and explained very clearly indeed. After each of these four sections we are shown combinations for each section and then at the end mixed combinations.

The next section details the Ram Muay and the Wai Khru. We are shown Sandy and one of his assistant Instructors demonstrating their particular ritual dance and are given a brief insight into the significance of them. The following section was the one that I was most keen to see; it covers Ling Lom, the traditional ground and clinch work aspect of Muay Thai which is very rarely seen these days. Again Sandy and his assistant Instructor show us a number of self defence techniques involving chokes and locks which are all equally impressive and will with out doubt be finding their way into my repertoire.

To finish off we are treated to some breaking techniques by his assistant Instructors and by Sandy himself kicking apples of swords and demonstrating his Stretch Armstrong style flexibility!

This is a good all round training video which will serve to teach nearly any level of experience although I might think aimed more at the novice and intermediate. Good video, well done Sandy, this is definitely worth buying to further anyone's Muay Thai knowledge.
