Short Report from Birmingham, England February 25th, 2001

The main event of the evening was Kash Gill's return to the ring after a two year layoff. However there was an excellent muaythai fight on the undercard between Gavin Sterrit (Beastmasters, Altrincham) and Simon Aston

Rnd 1: Aston start well landing an early knee that winded Sterrit leaving him looking uncomfortable from early on. The fighters exchanged kicks with Aston catching a couple of Sterrit's and throwing him back. Aston scored well throughout the entire round landing a number of 1,2 left hook combinations with low kicks mixed in as Sterrit tried to recover from the early knee.

Rnd 2: Sterrit started this round better with a low kick but ASton came back with a 1,2 left hook, right low kick combination. He then caught Sterrit's replying kick and threw him back and came in to land a left low kick with Sterrit landing a right low almost at exactly the same time. Aston then attempted a jumping knee that didn't land but had Sterrit backing off. ASton then came in with some strong straight punches but Sterrit push back with a mix of hooks to the head and body. Another left low kick from Aston scored and Sterrit replied with a right body kick. Aston came in with a left inside low, as Sterrit came back with a right body kick, Aston stepped in with a right cross to drop Sterrit, though he got straight back on his feet to end the round.

Rnd 3: ASton started this round in a hurry to continue the pressure coming in with a right body kick and then attempted a right elbow before coming in with some straight punch combos. Sterrit replied with a strong hook and then went into the clinch which he dominated well landing a particularly nice left knee. Coming out of the clinch ASton replied with a 1,2 left hook, left body kick reply. Sterrit returned a right body kick and blocked Aston's high kick before shutting down the space to go into the clinch. Sterrit again dominated the clinch with good knees before pushing Aston back to be boxed in his own corner by a more confident looking Sterrit.

Rnd 4: This round started with both fighters grappling each other until the clinching was ended by a throw by Aston. Both fighters then came in picking up the pace with some fast boxing, but neither were managing to connect before they then again went back to kneeing in the clinch. Sterrit then came out of the clinch and was boxing hard against Aston who lent back on the ropes and covered up before using a left kick to work his way out. There was then a long spell of grappling with both fighters landing knees. Aston then pushed back Sterrit with a teep kick before Sterrit scored last in the round with a good jab.

Rnd 5: This was another high paced round, with Aston starting with a left kick and then going into the clinch. Sterrit landed a beautiful right uppercut coming out of the clinch before grappling again with Sterrit on top landing the more knees. Aston then made good use of his left low kicks to keep Sterrit at bay who was looking to come in for the elbow. There was then a good exchange of kicks before Sterrit landing a nice right hook and ASton catching the following kick to end the round.

Result: What must have been a very close Majority decision to Simon Aston.

Kash "The Flash" Gill vs Conferance Johnson (Kickboxing low kicks)

Conferance Johnson was a late replacement for Holomo Moeti. Gill dominated the first round with his reach and using mainly 1,2 left hook right low kick combinations. Johnson struggled with the range of Gill but landed a couple of string low kicks.

In the second round a couple of jabs were exchanged before Gill stepped in with a right cross to produce an early knockout.

Other highlights of the evening included a British kickboxing title fight, won by Simon Kelly by stoppage and Dale Woods low kicks kickboxing fight. Wood who now trains at Bad Company muaythai gym in Leeds, showed good use of Thai style teeps amd low kicks. He won in the 4th round by stoppage due to a beautiful left teep to his opponents face.
